Pentium III System Setup

This PC is pretty fussy when it comes to specific driver versions and so on and stability.

Mostly just a reminder to myself. May be of use to anyone with a similar system.

Specs:

  • Intel D815EPEA2 Socket 370 Motherboard
  • Intel Pentium III 1.4GHz Tualatin
  • 512MB PC133 SDRAM
  • nVIDIA GeForce 3 Ti 200 64MB
  • 3DFX STB Black Magic Voodoo 2 12MB
  • Aureal Vortex 2 SQ2500 (Rev B)
  • Well FM-56PCI-AMB Modem

Prior to Install

Disable Parallel and Serial ports.
Disable integrated audio.
Rest can be default.

After Windows 98 SE Install

Windows Installer 2.0 Update
Some installers will fail to run without this update.

7zip
Needed for unzipping some drivers.

Internet Explorer 5.51
Needed if using this page to help install stuff.
Remember to add Core Fonts, Codecs, Additional Web Fonts.

Enable DMA after reboot.

Intel D815EPEA2 Integrated LAN

Intel Network Connections PRO 10.3
Gateway and DNS must be manually set afterwards.

Driver CD 2.040 Install this first, restart.
2041 with No PCI detect patch Then update to this.

After Drivers

DirectX 7.0a This seems to be the best balance of compatibility for older games. I prefer running DirectX 8/9 games on my Pentium 4.

Additional Tweaks

In Display Properties -> Effects, untick ‘Animate windows, menus and lists’, then tick ‘Show window contents while dragging’.

Enable Conservative Swapfile for less stress on SSD lifespan.
